DHPS Big Walk 2024: Great Team Spirit in Freezing Temperatures
14 km, 2°C, 500 learners and hikers, icy tables and even river beds, yummy cakes, steak rolls, and the festival grounds:
This sounds like Big Walk at Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS)!
Last Saturday, 8 June 2023, the DHPS community once again hiked on farm “Aris” in chilly temperatures for a good cause: supporting the DHPS primary section.
This fundraiser has been taking place since 1994, and the proceeds have been used to fund projects for grades 1-6, including improvements to the primary section’s school grounds, purchase of benches, shade nets, table tennis equipment, projectors, and whiteboards, jungle gyms, book boxes, and much more.
However, this event is not only about raising additional funds and enjoying outdoor activities but, above all, about fostering community spirit. Parents, teachers, the administration department, families, and visitors work together to organise a logistical masterpiece in the Namibian bush making this day - with all its catering stalls - a great success.
The atmosphere was exuberant again in 2024, and the icy temperatures at Farm Aris did not dampen the mood - after all, that's part of the Big Walk.
Next year, the DHPS will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Big Walk (it had to be canceled for two years due to Covid restrictions). It will be exciting to see what special celebrations the hiking enthusiasts come up with.
