Handball at DHPS: The comeback!

Since 2023, our handball club has steadily grown in popularity. Starting with about five players in mid-2023, it now boasts a committed core of over 30 players in the last quarter of 2024, spanning grades 6 to 10. Currently, boys make up the majority, though this may change with the strong national promotion of handball.
On Saturday, 26 October 2024, a DHPS Under-16 selection faced its first national test in a friendly match against Windhoek Central Primary School (WCPS).

DHPS players, joined by supportive parents who brought refreshments, arrived at 8:00 a.m. to help prepare the hall. They set up benches, arranged the scoreboard, inflated balls, secured the goals on the floor and checked the nets.
When the WCPS team arrived around 8:45, accompanied by WCPS’s Director and Mr Issy Nakamwe, President of the Namibia Handball Federation, both teams were ready to start after warm-ups and a few team photos.

Since handball is a strenuous sport with a lot of running and frequent player substitutions (each team typically consists of a goalkeeper, six outfield players, and around seven substitutes), the WCPS team, with only eight players, needed extra support. Two DHPS players stepped in to play for them and performed admirably.
The match was officiated by a youth referee from the Namibia Handball Federation, who gained valuable experience despite a few moments of uncertainty.

After a tense start to the game, with both sides showing nerves, the DHPS team grew more confident and displayed quick, coordinated moves that challenged the opposition.
Issy Nakamwe, coaching the WCPS team, kept the players motivated and frequently praised the skills and teamwork of the DHPS team. He jokingly remarked to the DHPS coach that he had expected a calmer game for his team - a hope that, of course, DHPS had spoilt.

DHPS led comfortably until half-time, but some line-up changes caused a brief dip in confidence after the break. However, the team quickly found its rhythm, finishing strong with a well-deserved 24-5 victory.
It is worth noting that all DHPS substitutes integrated seamlessly into the gameplay and in the end, every player contributed by scoring at least one goal. Goalkeeper André Schaeffler was a great support for the team and saved many of the opponents' shots on goal, including two 7-metre throws.
Top scorers for DHPS were Timo Keding, Johann Ritzer and Enzo Wangasha, while DHPS substitute Lindiano Treuke was a standout for WCPS.

The match was marked by fair play from both teams, with no penalties or send-offs. The future of handball at DHPS looks bright, with hopes that more girls and younger players will join and discover a passion for the sport.
